What does music mean discussion: We were assigned to watch the video titled "What Does Music Mean" by Leonard Bernstein, from 1958, and then discuss it-
When someone is asked what does music mean, one might say it is describing and telling you about something. However music actually means the way it makes you feel. The happy, sad , angry, excited feeling you get from it. Unlike with words that make you imagine a particular thing, music can make you image a number of things at the same time. For example in the piece “The pastoral Symphony” by Beethoven which was made to describe “the cheerful feeling on arriving on the country” but it could be listened to and could be about any cheerful scenario. This is also similar to Abstraction, because abstract is not made do directly represent anything but it’s a creation on its own. Rather than making a piece that represents or symbolize something in our world, it takes different forms and creates things for its own world. Similar to music, someone might look at an abstract work and find it is similar to something they know while another person might say otherwise. We can see from Piet Mondrian’s collection of artwork, how he went from making art that represent things in nature to truly abstract work that didn’t represent anything in nature.

Discussion assignment: We were asked to read the chapter on Regulating Lines from The book "Towards an Architecture" by Le Corbusier and discuss it.
Architecture has created a way for humans to create something of their own, something outside of nature. They use what is given to them to create something that is abstract in itself. They use shapes, lines, angles, and so much more using his own proportions and create things that are harmonious, united and work well together. An example of such an aspect is regulating lines.
Regulating lines is a concept that designers and architects use to create harmony and order when creating something. It allows for better rhythm and better decision making when considering the element being used. Regulating lines has been in use for as long as humans have been building, or creating constructs that are appealing. It serves as a guide and ensures the geometry of the construct is well maintained. As mentioned in the book, “A regulating line is an assurance against capriciousness”, what this means is that it ensures that a construct is not designed or built in an unpredictable and inconsistent way. In some buildings,regulating lines guide architecture on where to put doors or windows and other aspects and makes sure that they go well with the whole construct and have a purpose.

In both images there is balance, although it seems image B is more balanced compared to image A, A is still balanced in its own way. In image B, there is a balance in accordance to the figure and ground organization. The mountain can be considered as the figure and the sky as the background. While in image A, we have repeating patterns which also balances the image.
In image A, we can see there is a hierarchy organization. The figure in the front is made larger and more prominent than the other figures. It also has a good gestalt when looking at the proximity and similarity between some figures in the image.
Both have a variation in the sizes or proportions of the figures in the image. Both have very large figures which seem more prominent and more of a focal point of the image followed by smaller figures.
